Chapter Eight
We had walked over a mile and back along Princess Road when the curved theme returned this time with its bored impact of ‘roots’, and whose feet wouldn’t have dragged by now when forced to listen to it again! I won’t bore you with it this time.
Then back in our hotel room Sheel half rose from her chair and paused in a pre-jumping posture with her skirt riding up her massive haunches. - “Why am I remembering this now! But I am, suddenly so clearly. Two relatives committed suicide, three others were put in asylums, like me, but they were kept in. So, yes, it is possible that some did try to cash in on the publicity angle too! – The sideshow gimmick! – like my dad - and…… Sheel shook her head and sat down again. – “No, the detail’s gone again. All I can be sure of it that those that tried for celebrity on account of being ‘mars’ and those that pretended not to be ‘mars’ didn’t do themselves any favours. ‘Mars’ - the word describing us I heard whispered once in the corridor of some state office. I don’t like the word, it just slips out occasionally. But Oh crikey, Shirl!” – Sheel stamped her foot, which was only the second time I’d witnessed the action, but the floorboards of the hotel room complained louder than those in the pub we’d been thrown out of.
“Shush, Sheel!” I gasped. But she smiled to reveal a touch of pearl and said – “Don’t worry about that. What provoked it was another semi-obliterated memory returning. You might be curing me with some healing presence, girl, but the mental pain of it’s proving a damned nuisance. I remember now that my grandmother fell into Sydney Harbour!….. I saw it once from a great distance inland – slivers of silver sea spreading in from the coast…… Her leaving the younger family members now strikes me as being like a parent who leaves home because she can’t stand her offspring. It seems like the wrong way round – children usually leave home. But we – my parents too – had become like monstrous children, and we were just too downtrodden to have the will to run. She left, and fell……
“Or was she pushed! A woman of strong character and forthright was how my dad and mum described her. Oh hell, another memory – Donald! What happened to him – and his webbed feet? But that was a freak mutation. See!” – Sheel kicked her left shoe and stocking off. – When I wiggle my toes, they are separate, not webbed. I can’t account for the folds of skin between them.”
“But they’re as big as doorknobs!” I said.
“But some others did have webbed feet,” said Sheel quietly. “And all those suicides! “But were they all suicides! I really am becoming quite suspicious now about many previous deaths. Were they in fact mostly executions! What will be the next dark dimension of discovery!
